More info

Acerola, also known as the Barbados cherry, is a tropical fruit-bearing shrub, native to the West Indies. It is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C available in nature. Whereas an orange contains between .05 – 50mg per 100g, acerola contains 1,000 – 4,500mg of vitamin C per 100g. Traditional uses include treatment for liver ailments, diarrhea, dysentery, coughs and colds.

Acerola’s high vitamin C content makes it a powerful supplement, as vitamin C is a known antioxidant that helps prevent free radical damage and protect against certain chronic diseases. Vitamin C helps fight infections, strengthen the immune system, prevent blood clots, regenerate damaged skin tissues, build collagen and reduced the risk of heart disease and some cancers, particularly breast, skin and cervix.

Acerola has many benefits. It regulates cholesterol, protects against atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and prevents blood clots. The anthocyanins in acerola give the berry its red hue and act as powerful antioxidants. They help treat colds, gum infections, sore throat and hay fever, and can be more effective than aspirin for treating headaches.

Acerola has also been shown to improve metabolism as well as normalize heart rhythm and blood pressure. The cherry also contains vitamin A and beta-carotene, antioxidants that improve vision, prevent cataracts and retinal hemorrhages, alleviate arthritis and can act as anti-cancer agents. As with vitamin C, it’s possible to take too much acerola, so it’s important not to exceed recommended dosage.
